Siemens signs contract for La Caridad II combined cycle power plant

Siemens Energy has signed a contract with Minera México for the turnkey supply of a second combined cycle power plant in Mexico. Minera México is a subsidiary of Grupo México, the country?s largest mining company and one of the world?s largest copper producers. The plant is scheduled to achieve commercial operation in the spring of 2014, at which point will be able to supply electricity to the company?s copper mines. With the Siemens high-efficiency combined cycle power plant, Grupo México will be able to reduce its production costs and thus further strengthen its competitive position.

The La Caridad II combined cycle power plant, will be located in Sonora State, Mexico adjacent to the La Caridad I plant also being built by Siemens. It will have an installed capacity of 250 megawatts in addition to the 250 megawatts to be generated at La Caridad I. Siemens will be responsible for the full turnkey supply of the plant, which includes plant engineering, procurement, and construction. The main equipment to be installed in the plant includes an SGT6-5000F gas turbine, an SST-900 steam turbine, an SGEN6-1000A generator, a heat-recovery steam generator, and the complete electrical and SPPA-T3000 instrumentation & control equipment.

?The two combined cycle power plants will provide Grupo México with significant savings, as electricity is one of the main cost factors at its coal mines. The technology implemented in the plant design is testimony to the commitment of Grupo México to the environment. The La Caridad I and II power plant projects will create over 1000 jobs during plant construction, and more than 50 direct jobs during plant operation. With these two plants, Grupo México is starting a series of energy projects in Mexico in its infrastructure division, which will also include renewables,? said Xavier Garcia de Quevedo, Executive President of Grupo México.

Siemens has been a pioneer in the electrification of Mexico for more than one hundred years. The first series of turnkey combined cycle power plants built in Mexico were supplied by Siemens. ?The addition of La Caridad II as the second EPC project awarded to Siemens by Minera México demonstrates Siemens commitment to serving Grupo México?s energy needs with efficient and environmentally friendly power generation capacity,? said Roland Fischer, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. ?We highly appreciate and value Grupo México?s confidence in Siemens.?

Siemens is celebrating on November 16, 2011 its grand opening of the new Gas turbine facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the La Caridad I gas turbine being the first engine out of the new factory. High-efficiency combined cycle power plants are part of Siemens? environmental portfolio, with which the company earned revenues of around ?30 billion in fiscal year 2011. This makes Siemens the world?s largest supplier of environmentally friendly technology.
