Inauguration of the Irsching Ulrich Hartmann combined cycle power plant

In the presence of Horst Seehofer, Minister-President of Bavaria, and high-ranking representatives of E.ON and Siemens, the Irsching combined cycle power plant now called Ulrich Hartmann Plant was officially inaugurated on September 15, 2011.

The 561-megawatt (net) plant has been in commercial operation since July 22 of this year and has clocked up approximately 9000 operating hours, a figure which includes the preceding period of trial operation. Thanks to its world-record efficiency of 60.4 percent and its low nitrogen oxide emissions the Ulrich Hartmann Plant is the world's most ecofriendly fossil fueled power plant. Compared with the average figures for combined cycle stations installed worldwide it consumes one-third less gas per kilowatt-hour generated and emits approximately one-third less carbon dioxide. The plant is also characterized by its high operating flexibility, and short startup and fast load-cycling capability ? features which are becoming all the more important against the backdrop of increasing feed-in of fluctuating wind-based power.

"With this power plant we're writing engineering history. Currently, there's no other power plant in operation around the globe that is as efficient as this one," said Michael Suess, CEO of Siemens Energy. "To top that, in May of this year we attained a world record in efficiency during a test operation, thus impressively demonstrating what potential this technology has, and the end of development has not been achieved yet by a long way," added Suess. "For such developments you need a reliable partner, who is open to innovations. In E.ON we had a strong partner at our side from the very outset, with whom we jointly defined the right milestones and with whom in ongoing exchange we optimized the plant for commercial operation."
