DEGERenergie stops production of tracking systems for CPV applications

DEGERenergie will stop the production of its systems DEGERtraker 3000CT and 5000CT and not pursue sales activities in the field of Concentrating Photovoltaics (CPV) any longer. This was recently announced by the company. DEGERenergie is the global market leader for solar tracking systems.

?The increased yield which can be achieved with concentrator technology bears no reasonable proportion to the additional expenditure and does not justify the high development effort,? Michael Heck, Vice President Sales & Marketing at DEGERenergie, explains the decision made now. A key argument for CPV is the low space requirement, ?but especially in desert areas, where the benefits of CPV could be particularly remarkable, space is not really an issue.?

The CPV projects that have been repeatedly requested over the years have never proceeded beyond the status of prototypes at the producers of CPV modules. A mass production of those modules does not become apparent says Michael Heck. ?A profitable business with these systems is unlikely in the foreseeable future. We will keep on concentrating on the optimization of our systems on the basis of conventional photovoltaic technology. For this purpose DEGERenergie has allocated a research budget of 750.000 Euros for the next 18 months.?

Michael Heck also stated that their MLD technology for photovoltaic systems has in the meantime become well established worldwide, works flawlessly and brings the desired technical and economical benefits in all regions in the world. ?Compared to fixed systems, the patented DEGERenergie MLD technology improves the energy yield of solar power plants by up to 45 percent on average. This gain is based on the fact that our tracking systems always align themselves according to the brightest position in the sky and this way also convert diffused light or reflected light into energy,? Michael Heck explains.
